Why a Day-After or Bridal Session Might Be the Best Decision You Make

Your wedding day doesn't have to be the end of the celebration. It's one of those days you spend months, sometimes years, looking forward to. You plan the details, choose the location, find the perfect outfit, gather the people you love, and imagine what it will feel like to finally say, “I do.”

Then suddenly, it happens.

The dress goes on. You get married. You hug everyone you love. You dance, laugh, eat, drink, and celebrate. And before you know it, the night is over. But what if the celebration didn't have to end there?

A day-after session gives you the opportunity to put your wedding attire back on, step away from the wedding-day crowds, and intentionally spend time together somewhere that means something to you. Maybe it's somewhere you've always wanted to explore, a place that played a meaningful role in your relationship, or simply a beautiful landscape that feels like the perfect setting for your first adventure as a married couple.

Whatever you choose, the goal isn't to recreate your wedding day. It's about creating another experience together.

What Is a Day-After Session?

A day-after session is a photography experience that takes place after your wedding, where you get dressed back up in your wedding attire and head somewhere meaningful, beautiful, or completely unexpected.

Despite the name, it doesn't actually have to happen the day after your wedding. It could be two days later, a week later, or even months after you've said your vows. The idea is simple: you get to wear the dress and suit again and celebrate your marriage somewhere beyond your wedding venue.

Unlike wedding day portraits, there isn't a reception waiting for you to arrive or a ceremony happening in the next hour. We have intentional time to explore, experience a place, and create photographs along the way.

Maybe we hike to a viewpoint, wander through a forest, stop for coffee, explore a stretch of coastline, or find somewhere quiet to watch the sunset. The possibilities are pretty much endless.

The photographs are important, but the experience comes first.

A Chance to Actually Slow Down

Wedding days are incredible, but they're busy. Even with a carefully planned timeline, there are people to see, places to be, family portraits to organize, ceremonies to experience, and a reception waiting for you.

It's completely normal to reach the end of your wedding day and realize that some of it feels like a blur.

A day-after session gives you something your wedding day sometimes can't: intentional time together without the pressure of everything else happening around you.

There aren't dozens of people waiting for you to finish portraits. There isn't another event counting down in the background. You don't have to choose between spending time with your guests and spending time together.

Instead, you can actually slow down and enjoy being married.

If you want to stop at a viewpoint and take in the scenery, we can. If you want to explore a trail a little farther, let's go. If something catches your eye along the way, we can stop and see where it takes us.

The beauty is in having the freedom to experience the place instead of simply passing through it.

Go Somewhere That Means Something

One of my favorite parts of day-after sessions is that the location doesn't have to have anything to do with your wedding. In fact, sometimes that's what makes it even more meaningful. Maybe you got married in the city, but spend your weekends hiking in the mountains. Maybe the beach is where you had your first date. Or there's a national park you've always dreamed of visiting together. Some couples have a favorite camping spot, overlook, trail, lake, or stretch of coastline that has become part of your story.

Your session can take you there.

And if there isn't a place that immediately comes to mind, that's okay too. There are some pretty incredible places throughout Washington, Pacific Northwest, and beyond, and part of what I love about these sessions is helping couples find a location that fits their personalities and the kind of experience they want to have.

The goal isn't necessarily to find the most impressive place on a map. It's to find your place.

A location becomes much more meaningful when it connects to your story, whether that's somewhere you've loved for years or somewhere that becomes special simply because you experienced it together.

Your Wedding Attire Gets Another Chapter

There's something pretty special about seeing a wedding dress outside of the traditional wedding setting.

On your wedding day, your dress is part of a very specific story. You put it on knowing you're about to marry your person. Every photograph from that day carries the emotion and excitement of that moment.

A day-after session gives it another chapter.

Now you're wearing that same dress while standing on a mountain overlook, walking through the forest, exploring the coast, or watching the sun disappear across the desert. Your wedding attire becomes part of another memory instead of simply being packed away after one day.

And yes, your dress might get a little dirty.

It might pick up some dust or grass. The bottom might get wet. You might have to hold it up while hiking a trail. That's okay. Your wedding attire doesn't need to stay perfectly preserved in a closet. It can be part of the places you've explored together and the memories you've made as a married couple.

Sometimes those little imperfections are what make the photographs feel real.

Make It an Actual Adventure

I don't want your day-after session to feel like we're simply driving somewhere pretty, taking some portraits, and going home. Let's make it an experience worth remembering. If we're heading into the mountains, let's actually explore them. If we're going to the coast, let's walk the beach. If we're visiting a national park, let's find a trail and see where it takes us.

We can pack a picnic, bring your favorite drinks, stop at a coffee shop, take the scenic route, find a quiet overlook, or bring your dog along for the adventure. Whatever makes the experience feel like you two should be part of the plan. And that's an important part of how I approach these sessions. I'm not interested in creating a collection of photographs where you're standing in the same pose over and over again. I want to photograph you experiencing something together.

The photographs happen naturally as we're exploring.

Maybe it's the way you look at each other when you think nobody is watching. Maybe it's the laugh that happens when you realize your dress is covered in dirt. Maybe it's sitting together at the edge of a viewpoint, watching the landscape change as the sun goes down. Those moments are what turn a photo session into a memory.

You Don't Have to Choose Between Celebrating and Exploring

Another reason I love day-after sessions is that they allow your wedding day to be exactly what you want it to be. Want to spend your wedding surrounded by family and friends? Do it. Want to dance the entire night away? Absolutely. Want to spend your wedding day focused on your guests instead of disappearing for an extended portrait session? You should.

You don't have to sacrifice those moments just to get incredible photographs somewhere epic.

Instead, you can create another day dedicated to exploring together. Your wedding day can be about celebrating with everyone who helped you get here. Your day-after session can be about celebrating each other.

And there's something really beautiful about having both.

What Makes a Day-After Session Worth It?

At the end of the day, you're investing in more than photographs. You're investing in another experience.

You're giving yourselves permission to put the wedding attire back on, leave the expectations of the wedding day behind, and spend meaningful time together somewhere that matters.

You're creating photographs that don't look exactly like your wedding photographs. You're adding another chapter to the story you're already building together. And years from now, you won't just remember the photographs.

You'll remember hiking through that meadow together. You'll remember how cold it was standing on the coast. You'll remember laughing because your dress was dragging through the dirt. You'll remember sitting together and watching the sunset after the wedding was already over.

Those are the things that make these sessions special.

The photographs become a reminder of an experience you intentionally created together.

It Doesn't Have to Be the Day After

Despite the name, there is absolutely no requirement for your session to happen the morning after your wedding. If your wedding is followed by brunch, family gatherings, travel, or a honeymoon, don't feel like you have to squeeze this experience into the next morning.

Give yourselves some time.

A week later can be perfect. A month later also works. Even coming back months down the road can be meaningful. Maybe you want to wait for wildflowers, fall colors or snow. Maybe you want to wait until you're somewhere you've always dreamed of visiting.

There is no expiration date on celebrating your marriage.

In fact, waiting can sometimes make the experience even more meaningful. The wedding-day whirlwind has settled, you've had time to process everything, and now you get to put those clothes back on and remember what it felt like to start this new chapter together.

Let's Make Another Memory

Your wedding day is one chapter of your story. A day-after session gives us the chance to create another.

You get to explore without the expectations of a wedding day pulling you in a dozen different directions.

Most importantly, you get to spend intentional time together celebrating the fact that you're married.

If there's somewhere you've always wanted to go, let's go there. If there's a place that already means something to you, let's revisit it. And if you have no idea where you want to go, let's find somewhere that feels like the two of you.

Because your wedding may be over, but your story is just getting started.
