Intimate Backyard Wedding in Edmonds | Allison + Tim

There’s something pretty special about getting married at home.

Not because it’s simpler or more casual, but because home already carries a story. It’s where life has happened. Where holidays have been celebrated, friends have gathered, and memories have quietly stacked up over the years.

For Allison and Tim, their wedding took place at a family home that already held plenty of that history. It was a place that meant something to them long before it became the setting for their wedding day. And then, for one afternoon and evening, it became the place where another pretty important chapter was added.

A Place Full of History

What made this backyard wedding so meaningful wasn't just the setting. It was everything that had happened there before.

The house and property had been part of the family's story for years, which meant Allison and Tim weren't starting from scratch when they imagined their wedding. They were bringing their closest people into a place that already felt familiar.

That familiarity showed up everywhere.

The people walking through the house. The conversations happening around the yard. The stories being shared between guests. There was a comfort to the whole day that is hard to manufacture because it came from years of knowing one another.

This wasn't a group of people meeting for the first time at a wedding. These were family friends who had known Allison and Tim for decades. And that makes for one hell of a guest list.

When Your Wedding Guests Are Family

One of the things that stood out to me most about Allison and Tim's wedding was just how much history was gathered in one place.

There were people there who had watched them grow up, people who had been around through different seasons of their lives, and friends who had become family somewhere along the way.

A wedding already brings together the people who matter most. But when many of those people have known each other for decades, the atmosphere becomes something entirely different.

Old stories come back up.

People laugh about things that happened years ago.

Someone inevitably knows a version of the story that someone else has completely forgotten.

And somewhere in between all of that, you're celebrating a marriage. That's the kind of thing I love photographing because those relationships are what make the photographs matter long after the wedding day is over.

Letting the Backyard Be Part of the Day

A backyard wedding doesn't need to pretend it's something else. That's part of the fun. The trees don't need to be perfect. The house doesn't need to look like a venue. Every corner doesn't need to be transformed. Instead, you can embrace what makes the place yours.

For Allison and Tim, the home and property became part of the experience rather than simply a backdrop. It gave everyone space to relax, wander, catch up, and actually enjoy being together. And that's one of the biggest advantages of getting married somewhere that already feels like home. You know the space. Your family knows the space. Your guests can settle in and be themselves. There isn't a learning curve. It's just home.

Only today, there's a wedding happening in the backyard.

The Freedom to Make It Yours

One of the things I love about photographing backyard weddings is how much room there is for personality. You aren't trying to create a wedding that looks like someone else's. You get to decide what matters.

Maybe that's a long dinner table where everyone can sit together. Or it's lawn games, a favorite playlist, a fire pit, or your grandparents' old chairs pulled out for the ceremony. For others it's getting ready upstairs in the same house where you've spent holidays with your family. Or maybe it's taking ten minutes during the reception to disappear down the road with your photographer because you want a few quiet photographs together.

There really aren't many rules. And I think that's the point. Your wedding gets to feel like your life, just with a little more champagne and some stunning wedding attire.

The Photographs You Don't Expect

There are the obvious photographs from a wedding day. The ceremony. The portraits. The first dance. The big hugs. But weddings like this give you something else too.

You get photographs of the place itself. The house. The yard. The people who have been part of your life for years. The little details that might seem insignificant now but will become incredibly meaningful later.

A photograph of your parents standing in a familiar kitchen. A longtime family friend laughing with someone they haven't seen in years. Your wedding dress hanging inside a house that has witnessed so many chapters of your family's life.

Those aren't just wedding photographs.

They're pieces of your history.

Home Can Be an Incredible Place to Get Married

If you're considering a backyard or home wedding, I think the biggest thing to remember is that you don't need to make it feel like a traditional wedding venue.

Let it feel like home.

Bring in the things that make the space special. Add the pieces that make the celebration feel like you. Invite the people who have been part of your story. Then give everyone permission to enjoy themselves. That's what Allison and Tim did so well. They took a place that already meant something and filled it with even more memories.

One More Chapter

At the end of the day, Allison and Tim didn't just get married at a family home. They added their wedding day to its history. The same place that had already seen years of family gatherings, friendships, celebrations, and everyday life now had another story to tell.

Their story.

And years from now, when everyone comes back together, I imagine this wedding will become one of those stories that gets brought up again and again. The house will still be there. The trees will keep growing. The people will keep changing. But this day will always be part of the place. And I can't think of a better reason to get married at home.
